About RongamSerpens

Pioneering Eco-Conservation in Romania Since 2018

Welcome to RongamSerpens, where our passion for Romania's natural heritage drives everything we do. Nestled in the heart of one of Europe's most biodiverse regions, we've dedicated ourselves to preserving the extraordinary ecological tapestry that makes Romania special.

Our Story

RongamSerpens was born from a chance encounter in 2018 between Dr. Mihai Dragomir, a Romanian ecologist, and Elena Constantin, an environmental policy expert. While researching the alarming decline of endemic plant species in the Carpathian Mountains, they discovered a shared vision for a different approach to conservation.

What began as a small research project with just three volunteers has grown into Romania's most innovative conservation organization. The name "RongamSerpens" combines ancient Romanian and Latin roots meaning "guardian of the natural path" – reflecting our commitment to guiding Romania toward ecological harmony.

By 2022, we had established our headquarters in Cluj-Napoca and expanded our initiatives to encompass the Danube Delta, Carpathian forests, and urban centers across Romania. Today, we're a team of 28 full-time staff and over 500 volunteers working toward our 2026 sustainability goals.

Our Mission & Values

Guiding principles that shape our approach to conservation

Our Mission

To preserve and restore Romania's diverse ecosystems through innovative conservation strategies that balance environmental protection with sustainable community development.

By 2026, we aim to establish a network of integrated conservation projects spanning Romania's most critical ecological regions, creating a model for sustainable coexistence between humans and nature that can be replicated across Eastern Europe.

Core Values

  • Scientific Integrity: All our decisions are grounded in rigorous research and evidence-based approaches.
  • Community Partnership: We believe conservation succeeds only when local communities are equal stakeholders.
  • Innovative Solutions: We embrace new technologies and methodologies that advance conservation efforts.
  • Traditional Wisdom: Romania's traditional ecological knowledge guides our modern conservation practices.
  • Transparency: We maintain open communication about our methods, successes, and challenges.

Our Achievements

Milestones in our conservation journey

Protected Area Expansion

Successfully advocated for the expansion of protected territories in Romania by over 75,000 hectares, including critical habitats for endangered species such as the European bison and Carpathian lynx.

  • Established 12 new wildlife corridors connecting fragmented habitats
  • Secured legal protection for 5 previously unprotected old-growth forest areas
  • Created Romania's first community-managed conservation zone in the Eastern Carpathians

Biodiversity Recovery

Our targeted restoration programs have led to measurable increases in biodiversity across multiple ecosystems:

  • 40% increase in endemic plant species in monitored mountain meadows
  • Return of otters to three previously degraded river systems
  • Successful reintroduction of the Romanian hamster to agricultural landscapes
  • Establishment of Romania's most comprehensive biodiversity monitoring database

Community Engagement

Building relationships with local communities has been central to our success:

  • Trained over 1,200 farmers in sustainable agricultural practices
  • Established 15 eco-tourism initiatives generating €3.2 million in rural income
  • Created 35 school conservation clubs reaching more than 5,000 students
  • Developed Romania's first citizen science platform with 8,500 active contributors

Innovation & Research

Our commitment to scientific excellence has advanced conservation knowledge:

  • Published 45 peer-reviewed research papers on Romanian ecosystems
  • Developed patented low-cost water quality monitoring system
  • Created first comprehensive digital map of Romania's habitat connectivity
  • Pioneered AI-based wildlife tracking system reducing monitoring costs by 60%
